As summer reaches its peak, many families are doing something that usually feels routine: rinsing lettuce, sorting berries and chopping herbs for meals built around fresh produce. This year, however, those familiar kitchen rituals are unfolding against the backdrop of one of the largest U.S. outbreaks of cyclosporiasis in recent years, leaving consumers balancing healthy eating habits with growing uncertainty about food safety.
The outbreak, caused by the parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis, has spread across dozens of states during the height of the produce season. Federal investigators are working to identify the source, tracing multiple fresh produce items through complex supply chains. While officials have examined lettuce and other products, they have not identified a single contaminated food or supplier responsible for the illnesses.
That uncertainty has shaped daily decisions for households across the country. Some consumers say they have temporarily stopped buying bagged salads or certain fresh herbs. Others continue purchasing produce while paying closer attention to washing practices and public health updates. The absence of a confirmed source has made those choices especially difficult because many of the foods under scrutiny are staples of summer diets.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, laboratory-confirmed domestic cases surpassed 1,600 by mid-July, spanning 34 states. The agency is also reviewing thousands of additional reports that require analysis before they can be confirmed as domestically acquired infections. More than 140 people have been hospitalized, although no deaths have been reported.
Michigan has emerged as the center of the outbreak. State health officials reported more than 3,300 cases by July 14, with dozens of hospitalizations. Officials there have said current evidence suggests lettuce or other salad greens may be involved, while emphasizing that the investigation remains ongoing and that other foods have not been ruled out.
Cyclospora presents investigators with unusual challenges. Unlike many foodborne pathogens, the parasite has an incubation period that often lasts about a week or longer. By the time patients become ill, they may struggle to remember exactly what they ate, making traceback investigations more complicated. Fresh produce also moves through intricate domestic and international supply chains before reaching grocery shelves, adding further complexity to efforts to identify a common source.
The illness itself can be debilitating. Cyclosporiasis commonly causes prolonged watery diarrhea, along with nausea, bloating, stomach cramps, fatigue and loss of appetite. Without treatment, symptoms may persist for weeks and sometimes improve before returning. Young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems face a greater risk of serious illness, particularly when dehydration develops.
For physicians and public health workers, the outbreak has also become an exercise in communication. Advising people to eat a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables remains an important public health message, yet officials must also acknowledge concerns surrounding specific products under investigation.
The Food and Drug Administration has urged consumers to follow updates as investigators conduct traceback efforts. Public health experts continue to recommend careful food handling, including washing produce under running water and practicing good hand hygiene. They also note that Cyclospora is unusually resistant to chlorine and many common disinfectants, meaning washing alone cannot always eliminate the parasite if contamination has occurred. Cooking foods thoroughly remains the most reliable way to destroy it.
Cyclospora outbreaks are not new. Since the 1990s, U.S. investigations have linked previous outbreaks to imported raspberries, basil, cilantro, bagged salad mixes and other fresh produce. Cases typically increase during the warmer months, when consumption of raw fruits and vegetables rises and seasonal distribution networks expand. This year's outbreak, however, has been notable for both its size and the continuing absence of a confirmed source.
The investigation has also underscored how closely food safety depends on coordination among local health departments, state laboratories and federal agencies. Epidemiologists are comparing patient interviews, laboratory testing and supply-chain records to identify common links. Genetic and traceback analyses may ultimately determine whether one contaminated product—or several separate contamination events—are responsible.
Until investigators reach that conclusion, families are left making practical decisions with incomplete information. Many continue preparing seasonal meals while following health guidance as closely as possible, aware that fresh produce remains an essential part of a balanced diet even as questions persist about this outbreak.
For now, the grocery cart has become another place where public health and everyday life intersect. Each purchase of lettuce, herbs or berries reflects not only the routines of summer but also the broader effort by consumers, growers, retailers and health officials to restore confidence in the safety of the foods that routinely arrive on family tables. As investigators continue tracing the parasite's path through the food supply, households across the United States are waiting for the answer that has yet to emerge: where the outbreak began, and how to ensure it does not happen again.
