VIENTIANE — Lao President Thongloun Sisoulith has ordered authorities to strengthen protection of the Xong River, intensify action against illegal mineral extraction and improve environmental management in Vangvieng as part of a broader push to safeguard one of the country's best-known tourism destinations.
Thongloun issued the directives during a meeting on July 21 with provincial, district and village officials, business operators and residents in Vangvieng district, according to reports by Vientiane Province Television cited by local media. He said authorities should preserve the district's environmental assets while supporting sustainable socio-economic development and maintaining political stability.
The president instructed provincial and district authorities to work with central government agencies to improve the water quality of the Xong River, a major attraction for domestic and international visitors, and to preserve its environmental value. He also called for decisive measures to curb illegal mineral extraction, strengthen land management and improve coordination among different levels of government to ensure development policies are effectively implemented.
In addition to environmental protection, Thongloun directed local authorities to tighten urban planning, improve public cleanliness and facilities, and maintain high standards at tourism sites. He also urged stronger action to address social problems that could undermine Vangvieng's reputation, stressing the importance of public safety and order for residents and visitors alike.
Before the president's address, Phouthanouphet Xaysombath, secretary of the Vientiane Provincial Party Committee and chairman of the Vientiane Provincial People's Council, reported on the province's economic performance during the first half of 2026.
According to the provincial report, the economy expanded by 3.4% in the first six months of the year, while the province received about 1.93 million tourists. Authorities also highlighted ongoing challenges, including traffic congestion, deteriorating sections of National Road No. 13 North, protection of the Xong River and management of environmental impacts linked to mineral extraction.
The president said addressing those issues would be essential to achieving the government's long-term objective of developing Vangvieng into a world-class tourist destination while preserving its natural and cultural resources.
Following the meeting, Thongloun visited several tourism and development sites in Vangvieng, including Chang Cave, a mixed-tree plantation in Naxay village and a glass footbridge spanning a gorge in Huaysa-ngao village, according to local media.
