LLANO, California — Firefighters continued battling the Summit Fire in northern Los Angeles County on Saturday as the wildfire remained 0% contained after burning about 2,679 acres, with evacuation orders and warnings still in effect for communities near the fire zone, according to California fire authorities.
The fire, which started Friday afternoon near Jesus Canyon Road East and Avenue Z in the community of Llano, has prompted a unified response involving CAL FIRE, the Los Angeles County Fire Department, the San Bernardino County Fire Department and the U.S. Forest Service's Angeles National Forest. Officials said the cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
CAL FIRE said the wildfire expanded rapidly after ignition, fueled by dry vegetation and difficult terrain. Fire officials reported that steep, rugged conditions have complicated suppression efforts, with crews working from both the ground and the air, supported by night-flying helicopters to slow the fire's advance. The agency said the blaze was burning toward the footprint of the previous Bridge Fire, where reduced vegetation could help moderate fire behavior.
Mandatory evacuation orders remained in place for designated areas of Los Angeles County, including zones LAC-E107 and LAC-E127-C. Evacuation warnings also covered several nearby zones in Los Angeles and neighboring San Bernardino County, where residents were advised to leave early if they required additional time or needed to move pets or livestock.
Authorities established an evacuation shelter at the Antelope Valley Family YMCA in Lancaster for displaced residents, while a separate animal shelter was opened at the Los Angeles County Animal Care Center in Palmdale for evacuated pets.
As of the latest official update, fire officials had not reported any civilian or firefighter fatalities or injuries, nor had they confirmed damage to or destruction of structures. Emergency managers said assessments would continue as crews gained access to affected areas.
The Summit Fire is one of several active wildfires burning across California during the state's summer fire season. CAL FIRE's statewide incident dashboard continued to list the Summit Fire among active incidents on Saturday with no containment achieved.
Fire officials said suppression operations and evacuation orders would remain in effect while firefighters worked to establish containment lines, and they urged residents to monitor official updates as conditions could change rapidly.
