GUWAHATI — The death toll from floods in the northeastern Indian state of Assam has risen to 75 after seven more people died in Sivasagar district, while more than 332,000 residents remain affected across seven districts, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).
The latest fatalities were reported from the Nazira revenue circle of Sivasagar, ASDMA said in its daily flood bulletin, taking the cumulative toll from this year's flooding to 75. Authorities said floodwaters continue to affect 21 revenue circles and 622 villages across the state.
ASDMA said Charaideo remains the worst-hit district, followed by Sivasagar and Jorhat. Although the overall number of affected people has fallen from previous days, more than 3.32 lakh (332,000) people continue to face the impact of inundation.
Officials said 81 relief camps were operating, sheltering more than 32,000 displaced residents, while additional relief distribution centres continued supplying food and other essential items. Rescue and relief operations involving the Army, Air Force, National Disaster Response Force, State Disaster Response Force, fire services and local volunteers remained under way.
The ASDMA said the Dhansiri (South) River was flowing above the danger level at Numaligarh in Golaghat district. More than 45,000 hectares of cropland remained submerged, and damage to homes, schools, anganwadi centres and other infrastructure was reported from several affected districts.
Authorities said assessments and relief operations were continuing, with the flood situation under close monitoring as official casualty and damage figures remain subject to further updates.
