CARACAS — The United States has deployed Navy ships, military aircraft and support teams to Venezuela to assist earthquake relief operations after the country was struck by powerful quakes that damaged communities and prompted an international emergency response, U.S. Southern Command said.
The U.S. military deployment includes the amphibious transport dock USS Fort Lauderdale and littoral combat ship USS Billings, which were sent to support relief activities requested by the Venezuelan government and coordinated through the U.S. State Department, according to Southern Command. The ships are intended to provide mobility support, logistics assistance and help move personnel and supplies as rescue and recovery operations continue.
Southern Command said U.S. Air Force C-17 Globemaster aircraft were transporting urban search-and-rescue teams from Los Angeles and Fairfax, Virginia, along with equipment needed for emergency operations. Additional aircraft, including C-17 and C-130 transport planes, were deployed to support the movement of personnel and supplies.
The command also said U.S. Marine Corps MV-22 Osprey aircraft were being used to move an airfield assessment team to help evaluate aviation infrastructure affected by the earthquake. U.S. Army Chinook helicopters were also scheduled to support the transport of personnel and supplies from regional bases, according to the military statement.
The U.S. response followed twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24, including events measured at magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5, according to reports citing seismic and government information. The earthquakes caused widespread damage, including collapsed structures and disruption to emergency services in affected areas.
Venezuelan authorities have led domestic rescue efforts while international teams have arrived to assist with search-and-rescue and humanitarian operations. The United States said its military role was focused on disaster relief support, including assisting rescue teams, assessing damage and delivering critical supplies.
“Joint forces are moving quickly to bring the airlift, logistics and lifesaving capabilities of the U.S. military to help save lives and support the government of Venezuela during this crisis,” Southern Command said in a statement announcing the response.
The deployment comes as rescue crews continue working in areas affected by the earthquakes. U.S. officials said additional military support was being coordinated with Venezuelan authorities, the State Department and international partners as needs were assessed.
Southern Command said further updates on military assistance would be provided as additional capabilities are confirmed and relief operations progress.
