TEHRAN — Iran vowed on Thursday to respond forcefully to any U.S. attack on its infrastructure, after President Donald Trump threatened to strike an Iranian bridge or power plant for every ship targeted in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said in a post on X that Tehran's defence doctrine was based on reciprocal action and warned that any attack on Iranian infrastructure would trigger a decisive response.
“Our defence doctrine is clear: eye for an eye. Any aggression against Iran, including our infrastructure, will compel a powerful and decisive response,” Araghchi said. He added that entities supporting such aggression would also be considered legitimate targets.
The exchange of threats came as the United States and Iran remained locked in a confrontation over shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a major global energy transit route. The U.S. military said early Thursday it was conducting another night of strikes against Iran, saying the operations were aimed at reducing Tehran's ability to threaten commercial vessels and civilian mariners in regional waters.
Iranian state media, meanwhile, reported that U.S. missiles had struck locations near the western Iranian cities of Ahvaz, Ramshir and Andimeshk, although those reports were not independently verified in the available reporting.
The latest warnings add to a series of threats by both sides against infrastructure and raise the risk of further disruption to shipping and energy supplies across the Gulf. Iran has previously warned that any U.S. attack on its infrastructure could prompt retaliatory strikes against infrastructure elsewhere in the region, according to Iranian military officials cited in regional reporting.
The United States has said its military operations are intended to protect maritime traffic and restore freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, while Iran has rejected U.S. pressure and continued to warn against military action against its territory.
There was no immediate indication on Thursday that either side had withdrawn its threats. The confrontation remained focused on the Strait of Hormuz, with Washington continuing military operations and Tehran warning that attacks on its infrastructure would be met with retaliation.
