BHUBANESWAR— Odisha remained on alert on Tuesday as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast continued rainfall across parts of the state under the influence of a cyclonic circulation, prompting authorities to monitor flood-prone areas and advise residents to remain cautious.
The IMD said active southwest monsoon conditions, supported by the cyclonic circulation, were expected to bring moderate to heavy rainfall at isolated places over Odisha over the coming days. The weather system is part of a broader revival of monsoon activity affecting eastern, central and northern India, with heavy rain warnings also issued for several neighboring states.
State disaster management and district authorities continued to monitor river levels, low-lying areas and locations vulnerable to waterlogging and localized flooding. Officials urged residents in areas prone to heavy rainfall to follow weather advisories and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rain.
The IMD has warned that heavy rainfall may reduce visibility, disrupt road transport and increase the risk of localized flooding, particularly in urban areas and districts with poor drainage. The agency also advised fishermen to remain alert to changing weather conditions along the Odisha coast as rough sea conditions could accompany the active monsoon phase.
The renewed rainfall follows a period of enhanced monsoon activity over eastern India linked to weather systems over the Bay of Bengal. Earlier this month, the IMD said a well-marked low-pressure area and associated cyclonic circulation had produced widespread heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across parts of Odisha before gradually weakening as it moved inland.
Meteorologists said the current pattern reflects another active phase of the southwest monsoon, with rainfall expected to remain above normal across several parts of eastern India over the next several days. The IMD has advised local administrations to remain prepared for possible impacts including waterlogging, temporary traffic disruptions and isolated damage from strong winds accompanying thunderstorms.
No major statewide casualties or significant weather-related damage linked to Tuesday's forecast had been officially reported at the time of publication. Authorities said they would continue monitoring the evolving weather situation and issue further advisories as required, while the IMD indicated that rainfall activity over Odisha would remain under close observation as the cyclonic circulation influences conditions across the region.
