GENEVA—The United Nations is convening the inaugural Global Dialogue on Artificial Intelligence Governance in Geneva on Monday, bringing together governments, industry representatives, academics and civil society to begin structured international discussions on managing rapidly advancing AI technologies.
The two-day meeting, held at the Palexpo convention centre on July 6–7, 2026, is the first session of a UN-mandated process established by General Assembly resolution A/RES/79/325 to create an inclusive forum on global AI governance, according to UN documentation and event materials.
In opening remarks at the launch of the dialogue, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said AI was “advancing at runaway speed” and posed the question of whether it would be governed collectively or allowed to develop without coordinated oversight, according to a UN press release.
The dialogue brings together all 193 UN member states alongside private sector actors and other stakeholders, and is designed to address policy gaps amid growing concern that regulation is not keeping pace with technological development.
A key focus of the meeting is the presentation of findings from the UN’s Independent International Scientific Panel on Artificial Intelligence, a 40-member expert group tasked with assessing the risks and opportunities of AI systems globally. Its preliminary report highlights both the potential benefits of AI across sectors such as education and health, as well as risks including misinformation, inequality and loss of control over advanced systems.
The panel has also warned that AI development is advancing faster than the ability of many governments to regulate or independently evaluate systems, increasing reliance on company-provided data for safety assessments.
UN officials say the dialogue aims to translate such scientific assessments into a shared international understanding that can inform future governance frameworks. The process is structured to include thematic discussions, high-level plenaries and stakeholder exchanges over the two-day session, according to UN programme materials.
The Geneva meeting is being held alongside broader UN and International Telecommunication Union initiatives on AI, including the “AI for Good” programme, reflecting an effort to align technical standards, development priorities and governance discussions within a single policy ecosystem.
Further sessions of the Global Dialogue are scheduled for future years, as UN member states continue consultations on how to shape longer-term international approaches to AI governance.
The Geneva session concludes on Tuesday, with no immediate policy decisions expected, and outcomes focused on consolidating discussion themes for subsequent rounds of the UN-led process.
