NEW YORK — The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed above 52,000 for the first time on Monday as Alphabet Inc. made its debut as a member of the blue-chip index, helping drive a broad rebound in technology shares.

The Dow ended the session at a record level above the 52,000 mark, marking the first closing milestone above that threshold in the index’s history, according to Dow Jones Market Data. The move came as investors bought technology stocks and other large companies after recent market weakness.

Alphabet, the parent company of Google, began trading as a Dow component after replacing Verizon Communications, a change announced by S&P Dow Jones Indices on June 23. Alphabet shares gained during their first day in the index, giving the Dow a boost because the price-weighted benchmark assigns greater influence to higher-priced stocks.

The addition increased the Dow’s exposure to areas including digital advertising, cloud computing and artificial intelligence. Alphabet joined other major technology companies already represented in the index, including Nvidia Corp., Amazon.com Inc., Apple Inc. and Microsoft Corp.

Technology stocks led the broader market advance, with the Nasdaq Composite and S&P 500 also rising as investors returned to growth-oriented shares. Market participants had recently focused on concerns including artificial intelligence investment costs, interest rates and geopolitical risks.

The Dow’s move above 52,000 represented another major milestone in a year of gains for the index. The latest 1,000-point rise from 51,000 to 52,000 came after about 20 trading days, according to Dow Jones Market Data.

Alphabet’s inclusion reflects the continued shift in the Dow’s composition toward large technology companies. The company’s entry also required funds tracking the index to adjust their holdings to match the new lineup, according to market data providers.

Investors continued to monitor upcoming economic data, corporate earnings and Federal Reserve policy signals for indications of the market’s direction. The next major focus for Alphabet as a Dow component will be its future earnings performance and how investors assess its growth in advertising, cloud services and artificial intelligence-related businesses.
