WASHINGTON — The possibility of vivid aurora displays could enhance skywatching opportunities for Independence Day celebrations across parts of the northern United States this weekend, forecasters said.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Center has forecast geomagnetic storm conditions, potentially reaching G2 or G3 levels, driven by coronal mass ejections from recent solar activity. Such storms can push the northern lights farther south than usual, making them visible on the northern horizon in multiple states overnight from July 3 into July 4.
NOAA officials indicated that activity associated with a significant X-class solar flare on June 30 and subsequent eruptions could produce moderate geomagnetic storms. Conditions are expected to strengthen into Friday evening and persist into Saturday, according to the agency’s three-day forecast.
Auroras may be visible across up to 26 states, particularly those near the Canadian border such as Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin, with potential sightings farther south depending on local conditions and storm intensity, forecasters said. Clear, dark skies away from city lights will be essential for optimal viewing.
The Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska also reported high auroral activity forecasts for northern latitudes on Friday.
This development comes amid elevated solar activity in 2026, following the peak of Solar Cycle 25. Scientists note that the years after solar maximum often feature strong, unpredictable outbursts capable of producing notable auroral displays at lower latitudes.
No major impacts on infrastructure are currently anticipated from the forecasted storm levels, though space weather officials continue to monitor the situation. The Space Weather Prediction Center provides real-time updates and aurora forecasts for the public.
Skywatchers planning July 4 outings are advised to check local forecasts and NOAA resources for the latest predictions as conditions can evolve rapidly. The auroral activity is expected to coincide with evening and overnight hours, potentially offering an additional natural spectacle alongside fireworks displays in many areas.
