TOKYO — Tropical Storm Jangmi forced evacuation warnings and disrupted transport across Japan as authorities responded to heavy rain, flooding risks and strong winds that swept through several regions, according to Japanese officials and weather agencies.
The storm, which moved across Japan after affecting the southern Ryukyu Islands, brought intense rainfall and prompted local governments to advise residents in vulnerable areas to move to safer locations. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) warned of risks including landslides, river flooding and storm-related damage as Jangmi tracked northeast across the country.
Authorities issued evacuation advisories covering hundreds of thousands of residents in multiple prefectures, with officials urging people near rivers, steep slopes and flood-prone areas to follow local instructions. Japan’s government said disaster response agencies were coordinating with municipalities to provide weather and evacuation information.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara urged residents in affected areas to act early when evacuation guidance was issued. “Please continue to pay close attention to evacuation information from your local authorities, and if you feel even the slightest sense of danger, do not hesitate to take early action to protect your life,” he said at a government briefing.
The storm caused widespread transport disruptions, including flight cancellations, rail service interruptions and road closures. Major operators adjusted schedules as heavy rain and strong winds affected travel across parts of the country.
The Fire and Disaster Management Agency reported injuries and property damage after the storm moved through Japan, while local authorities assessed flooding, fallen trees and other impacts. Around 60,000 households were reported to have lost power during the storm, according to officials.
Jangmi approached Japan after passing near Okinawa, where authorities had already issued evacuation-related guidance and opened emergency shelters ahead of the storm’s arrival. Forecasts from the JMA showed the system bringing heavy rainfall potential from southern Japan toward eastern regions, including areas along the Pacific coast.
By the latest official updates, the storm had moved away from Japan and weakened, with authorities continuing to monitor lingering risks from swollen rivers, unstable slopes and residual flooding in affected areas.
