KYIV—Russia launched an overnight barrage of ballistic missiles and drones against Kyiv and several other Ukrainian regions, damaging residential and commercial buildings and killing at least six people nationwide, Ukrainian authorities said on Sunday, while Moscow said Ukrainian drone strikes also killed civilians in Russian-controlled territory.
Ukraine's Air Force said Russia fired seven ballistic missiles and 136 drones during the overnight assault. Air defence units intercepted many of the incoming weapons, but officials said several missiles and drones reached their targets, triggering fires and damaging infrastructure in the capital and other cities.
Kyiv's military administration said the capital came under ballistic missile attack in the early hours of the day. Local officials reported injuries, fires in multiple districts and damage to residential buildings, while emergency crews were deployed to affected areas. Authorities said there were no confirmed fatalities in Kyiv from the strikes.
Elsewhere, Ukrainian emergency services said a Russian drone struck a supermarket in the northern city of Chernihiv, killing two people, including a nine-year-old child, and wounding dozens. Additional attacks in the southern regions of Zaporizhzhia and Kharkiv caused further deaths and injuries, bringing the nationwide death toll to at least six, according to regional officials.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attacks, describing them as deliberate strikes against civilians, and called on Ukraine's international partners to maintain military and political support as Russia continued its air campaign. Ukrainian officials said rescue operations and damage assessments were continuing.
Russia's Defence Ministry did not immediately comment on the specific strikes on Kyiv. Separately, Russian-installed authorities in the occupied city of Horlivka in eastern Ukraine said four civilians were killed in a Ukrainian drone attack. Reuters could not independently verify the claims from either side regarding events in occupied territory.
The latest exchange of long-range attacks came as fighting continued across the front line and amid renewed diplomatic discussion of possible steps toward reducing aerial attacks. The Kremlin said it was too early to comment on reports of potential U.S.-Ukraine proposals for an air ceasefire, while noting that contacts with Washington remained open.
Emergency services across Ukraine remained engaged in rescue and recovery efforts on Sunday, while regional authorities continued to assess casualties and damage from the overnight strikes.
