Mojtaba Khamenei was appointed by Iran's Assembly of Experts in March after his father was killed in U.S.-Israeli strikes at the start of the conflict between Iran and its adversaries, according to Iranian state media. Since then, no authenticated video or public address by the new supreme leader has been released, with messages attributed to him instead delivered through written statements or read by state television presenters.
Iranian authorities have not publicly detailed the reasons for his absence. Earlier reports from state-linked media acknowledged that Mojtaba Khamenei survived the strike that killed several members of his family, while independent media reported he was injured, although the extent of those injuries has not been independently verified.
The issue has drawn renewed attention as Iran holds week-long funeral ceremonies for the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Reuters witnesses and reporting showed tens of thousands of mourners gathering in Tehran as officials sought to project continuity following the country's leadership transition and the recent war. Reuters reported that Mojtaba Khamenei had not appeared publicly during the ceremonies.
Some media outlets and analysts have speculated that security concerns may be preventing the new leader from appearing in public. Those assessments have not been confirmed by Iranian authorities, who have continued issuing official statements in his name and have given no indication that his authority has changed.
