OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. — Mississippi authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of 18-year-old Nolan Xavier Wells, whose body was recovered after he went missing during a Fourth of July boating trip to Horn Island, a barrier island off the state’s Gulf Coast. Officials said the investigation remains active as they work to determine the events leading up to his death.
The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said Wells was reported missing after he did not return from the island with people who had accompanied him on the trip. Authorities later recovered a body believed to be Wells, and Jackson County Coroner Bruce Lynd confirmed the identification through dental records, according to reports.
Sheriff John Ledbetter said investigators have been reviewing witness accounts, available video and other information related to Wells’ final hours. Authorities have asked members of the public to provide photographs, videos or eyewitness information from the northwest area of Horn Island on July 4, particularly material that could help establish a timeline.
The sheriff’s office has said investigators have not found evidence of foul play at this stage and have indicated that an accidental drowning is being considered. Officials have stressed that the investigation is ongoing and that they are continuing to examine all available information.
Wells, a recent graduate of Ocean Springs High School and a student-athlete at Southwest Mississippi Community College, was last seen on Horn Island during the holiday weekend trip, authorities said. The search for him involved multiple agencies, including local authorities and federal partners, before his body was located.
The case has drawn public attention after Wells’ family raised questions about the circumstances surrounding his disappearance. The family has retained civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump, who has called for a thorough review of witness accounts and investigative records. Crump’s statements represent the family’s concerns and have not been presented by authorities as verified findings.
Authorities have not announced a final cause or manner of death. Investigators are awaiting additional information, including medical examination results, while continuing to seek information from anyone who may have details about Wells’ movements before his death.
