WASHINGTON — Megadonors have contributed more than $1.3 billion to influence the 2026 U.S. midterm elections so far, according to a Washington Post analysis of Federal Election Commission data published Thursday.
The 50 largest individual donors have given a combined $1.37 billion during the cycle, with the money flowing predominantly to super PACs that can accept unlimited contributions. Republican-leaning donors accounted for about $880 million in the first half of 2026, compared with roughly $290 million from Democratic-leaning givers and $200 million from bipartisan or special interest groups.
Billionaires and high-profile technology executives dominate the top of the donor list. The analysis highlights a heavy reliance on large contributions to outside groups rather than direct candidate donations.
George Soros led the rankings with $102 million, directed primarily through entities supporting Democratic causes. Venture capitalists Ben Horowitz and Marc Andreessen followed with $91.2 million, much of it to pro-technology and cryptocurrency efforts. Elon Musk contributed $85.1 million to Republican-aligned groups, including America PAC.
Other top donors include Jeff and Janine Yass with $83.7 million, Miriam Adelson with $67.6 million, and Richard and Elizabeth Uihlein with $50.7 million, all directing funds largely toward Republican priorities.
The surge reflects the continued influence of super PACs following the 2010 Supreme Court decision in Citizens United v. FEC, which removed limits on independent expenditures. Much of the money supports efforts to maintain or gain control of Congress in the November midterms.
Cryptocurrency firms also featured prominently among organizational donors, with Coinbase contributing $56.1 million and Ripple Labs $49.6 million, mostly to the pro-crypto super PAC Fairshake.
A representative for one major donor group described the contributions as supporting policy priorities important to their interests. Critics, including campaign finance reform advocates, have raised concerns about the concentration of political funding among a small number of wealthy individuals.
"These megadonors are shaping the battlefield," said Sheila Krumholz, executive director of OpenSecrets, in a statement on the trends. "The scale of early giving sets the stage for what could be one of the most expensive midterm cycles on record."
As of Thursday, full details on total spending across all donors and the precise allocation toward specific races remained subject to ongoing FEC filings. Party committees on both sides continue active fundraising as the election approaches.
