WASHINGTON — Iran said on Monday it had damaged U.S. military facilities in the latest wave of American attacks and claimed its retaliatory strikes had hit several U.S.-linked bases across the Gulf region, while Washington said its operations were aimed at reducing Tehran’s ability to threaten shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it had targeted U.S. military sites in Bahrain and Kuwait and struck other facilities in the region, including radar systems and fuel-related infrastructure. The claims could not be independently verified, and U.S. officials disputed aspects of Iran’s account of the damage caused by Iranian strikes.
The latest exchange followed a new wave of U.S. strikes against Iran. U.S. Central Command said American forces struck multiple locations in Iran using aircraft, naval assets and drones, targeting what it described as air-defense systems, coastal radar sites, missile and drone capabilities, and small boats.
Iran said the attacks were retaliation for what it described as continued American military action. The IRGC said its forces targeted Bahrain’s Sheikh Isa Air Base, claiming strikes hit helicopter facilities, a hangar associated with a P-8 aircraft and a U.S. drone command center.
U.S. officials have not confirmed the extent of damage to American installations from the latest Iranian attacks. A U.S. official said earlier reports of major damage at a U.S. facility in Jordan were inaccurate and that most Iranian missiles and drones launched in that incident were intercepted or destroyed.
The confrontation has centered partly on control of the Strait of Hormuz, a key waterway for global energy shipments. Iran has said the strait was closed following the escalation, while U.S. Central Command said the passage remained open and that Washington was prepared to maintain freedom of navigation.
The latest attacks have increased pressure on already fragile efforts to reduce tensions between Washington and Tehran. Regional governments and international actors have called for restraint as missile and drone exchanges continue across parts of the Middle East.
As of Monday, both sides continued to report military activity and competing claims over the impact of recent strikes, with no independent assessment confirming the full extent of damage to U.S. or Iranian facilities.
