WASHINGTON — Two U.S. service members were killed and another remains missing after what the U.S. military said was an Iranian ballistic missile and drone attack on U.S. and partner forces in Jordan, marking a significant escalation in the widening regional conflict.
U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said the attack occurred on July 17 as U.S. and partner forces defended against incoming missiles and drones. Four additional U.S. service members were medically evacuated to hospitals in Jordan and have since been discharged, while other personnel treated for minor injuries have returned to duty.
CENTCOM said it was withholding the identities of the two killed service members, as well as additional information about the missing service member, pending notification of their families. The military did not immediately provide further operational details about the attack or identify the specific unit involved.
The deaths are the first confirmed U.S. combat fatalities from direct Iranian fire in Jordan during the latest phase of hostilities, according to U.S. officials. The attack prompted renewed U.S. strikes against targets in Iran, as Washington said it was responding to continued threats against American forces and regional security.
Jordanian authorities had not publicly released additional information about the incident at the time of publication.
