WASHINGTON — The U.S. Commerce Department authorized Anthropic on June 26 to restore access to its Claude Mythos 5 artificial intelligence model for more than 100 vetted U.S. companies and federal agencies, ending a two-week export-control suspension imposed over national security concerns.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick informed Anthropic of the decision in a letter to the company's chief compute officer, writing that Anthropic had worked with the government to address risks associated with the model and that those efforts "have yielded significant progress." Lutnick said he had determined that appropriate safeguards were in place to permit "certain trusted partners" to access Mythos 5.
The Commerce Department had ordered Anthropic on June 12 to suspend all access to Mythos 5 and a related model, Fable 5, citing concerns that security guardrails on the systems could be bypassed. The directive barred foreign nationals, including non-citizen Anthropic employees in the United States, from accessing either model and prompted the company to disable global access to both.
Anthropic, in a statement, said Mythos 5 would be redeployed to U.S. organizations that operate and defend critical infrastructure, and that it was working to restore access "as quickly as possible." The company describes Mythos 5 as its strongest cybersecurity model. Access will run through Project Glasswing, a program Anthropic launched in April that gives select cyber defenders and infrastructure providers early access to Mythos-class systems for vulnerability discovery and patching.
Fable 5, Anthropic's more powerful general-purpose model, remains restricted, with no confirmed timeline for its return. Anthropic said discussions with the government were continuing toward expanding Mythos 5 access and restoring Fable 5 for general use.
The restoration coincided with separate U.S. government approval for a phased release of OpenAI's GPT-5.6 model to vetted partners. As of Tuesday, the list of organizations cleared to receive Mythos 5 access remained limited to the U.S. partners named in Lutnick's letter, and no further expansion had been confirmed.
