LONDON — Improvements in air quality, combined with broader gains in public health and living standards, have helped prevent millions of premature deaths linked to air pollution over recent decades, according to new research that underscores the health benefits of sustained pollution-control policies.

The global modeling study, published in 2026 by researchers led by the Stockholm Environment Institute at the University of York, found that cleaner air has substantially reduced mortality from fine particulate pollution, while improvements in healthcare, nutrition and poverty reduction have further lowered people's vulnerability to pollution exposure. The researchers estimated that about 1.7 million premature deaths were avoided worldwide in 2019 because of reduced vulnerability alone compared with a scenario in which social and health conditions had remained unchanged.

The study examined trends between 1990 and 2019 and concluded that reductions in vulnerability accounted for roughly 52% of the decline in global air pollution mortality rates over that period, with lower pollution concentrations responsible for the remainder. The findings suggest that public health measures and socioeconomic development can significantly amplify the benefits of cleaner air.

Researchers said outdoor air pollution remains one of the world's leading environmental health risks despite decades of progress in many regions. The World Health Organization estimates that air pollution contributes to millions of premature deaths each year, primarily through heart disease, stroke, lung cancer and respiratory illnesses.

According to the authors, improvements in access to healthcare, reductions in extreme poverty and better overall health have strengthened populations' resilience to pollution exposure. They cautioned, however, that these gains should complement rather than replace efforts to reduce emissions from transport, industry and energy production.

The findings come as governments continue to evaluate policies aimed at reducing emissions from fossil fuels and expanding cleaner transport technologies. Separate studies published in 2026 have projected substantial additional health benefits from ambitious climate and air quality measures, including millions of avoided premature deaths globally over coming decades if emissions are significantly reduced.

Researchers said the results reinforce the need for integrated policies that combine air pollution controls with investments in healthcare and social development, particularly in lower-income countries where pollution burdens remain highest. They added that continued monitoring of both pollution levels and population vulnerability will be important for measuring future public health gains.
