ARLINGTON, Va. — Shares of AeroVironment climbed sharply this week after the defense technology company reported stronger-than-expected quarterly results and projected what its chief executive described as "unprecedented" demand for military systems, reinforcing investor expectations that rising global defense spending will support sustained growth.

The drone and autonomous systems manufacturer posted record fiscal fourth-quarter revenue of $641.6 million for the period ended April 30, more than doubling from a year earlier and exceeding Wall Street expectations. Adjusted earnings also topped analyst forecasts, while the company's funded backlog expanded to approximately $1.2 billion, reflecting strong order activity across its defense portfolio.

The earnings report prompted a strong rally in AeroVironment shares, with investors responding to robust financial performance and management's outlook despite guidance for adjusted earnings that fell below some analyst expectations. Market participants instead focused on accelerating demand for unmanned aircraft, precision-strike systems and counter-drone technologies.

Chief Executive Wahid Nawabi told analysts that the company is experiencing unprecedented demand across its markets, citing increased defense procurement by governments responding to evolving security threats. He said the company expects elevated demand to continue over the next several years as customers expand investments in autonomous systems, counter-unmanned aircraft capabilities and related technologies.

The results were also supported by AeroVironment's acquisitions of BlueHalo and Empirical Systems Aerospace, which broadened the company's offerings in directed energy, space technologies and advanced defense systems. Excluding those acquisitions, the company said it still achieved substantial organic revenue growth.

For fiscal 2027, AeroVironment forecast revenue of between $2.13 billion and $2.23 billion, signaling continued expansion following a year of record sales. Management said growing international demand, modernization programs and continued U.S. military procurement should provide long-term support for its business.

Analysts said the company's expanding backlog and strong bookings indicate improving revenue visibility, even as investors continue to monitor integration risks associated with recent acquisitions and the premium valuation of defense technology stocks.

AeroVironment specializes in unmanned aircraft systems, loitering munitions, counter-drone technologies and related defense products used by the U.S. military and allied governments. Its latest earnings reinforced broader investor optimism toward defense companies positioned to benefit from sustained increases in global military spending, although analysts cautioned that government procurement cycles and contract timing can still contribute to quarterly volatility.
