As artificial intelligence tools became a routine part of daily work, marketing specialist Sarah Chen found that many of the tasks that once filled her day could now be completed in minutes. Instead of spending hours drafting campaign copy or preparing client summaries, she increasingly reviewed AI-generated material, refined strategy and met customers to understand what technology could not. "My job didn't disappear," Chen said in a recent interview published by the Financial Times. "It changed."
Her experience reflects a broader shift taking place across offices, factories and professional services as employers adapt to rapidly improving AI systems. Rather than a simple story of jobs being replaced, the transformation is increasingly about workers rebuilding careers around new expectations, learning unfamiliar skills and redefining what makes human expertise valuable.
The transition is unfolding unevenly. Some companies have slowed hiring for junior positions while redesigning work around AI-assisted teams. Others are investing heavily in training, betting that employees who can effectively work alongside AI will become a competitive advantage. Economists and labour experts say the outcome will depend less on the technology itself than on how quickly workers, employers and education systems adapt.
Research from the International Monetary Fund suggests the demand for new workplace skills is already visible in hiring data. Its analysis of millions of online job advertisements found that roughly one in 10 vacancies in advanced economies now requires at least one new skill, while emerging markets are also seeing growing demand for digital and AI-related capabilities. At the same time, new occupations are appearing alongside automated tasks, creating opportunities for workers willing to retrain.
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development has reached similar conclusions. In a policy review published in 2026, the OECD said shortages of AI-related skills have become one of the largest barriers to wider adoption of the technology. Employers surveyed across member countries reported increasing demand not only for technical expertise but also for data interpretation, communication, collaboration and problem-solving—skills that remain difficult to automate. Training, the OECD found, has become the dominant response among firms seeking to integrate AI successfully.
For many workers, however, retraining means more than attending a workshop. It often requires reconsidering long-established career paths.
Entry-level employees have been among those most affected. Companies that once hired large numbers of graduates to perform routine analytical or administrative work are increasingly using AI to handle first drafts, document reviews and research tasks. According to reporting by the Financial Times, employers are responding by expecting younger recruits to contribute higher-value judgement, creativity and interpersonal skills earlier in their careers, effectively "seniorising" many entry-level roles.
That shift presents opportunities as well as challenges. Young professionals familiar with AI tools may adapt quickly, but they also face fewer traditional stepping stones into some professions. Older workers, meanwhile, often possess valuable institutional knowledge but may need additional support to integrate unfamiliar technologies into established routines. Former U.S. Federal Reserve governor Kevin Warsh recently argued that while AI could create jobs over the long term, the adjustment period is likely to be more difficult for workers later in their careers.
International labour experts caution against viewing technical skills alone as the answer. The International Labour Organization said in July that AI's rapid spread makes foundational abilities—including literacy, problem-solving, digital competence and socio-emotional skills—more important rather than less. The organisation estimates that nearly one-quarter of workers worldwide are employed in occupations potentially exposed to AI, but exposure does not automatically translate into job loss.
Businesses are also learning that successful AI adoption depends on organisational change as much as software deployment. Deloitte Access Economics recently concluded that AI is reshaping hiring patterns more rapidly than employment levels, with organisations increasingly seeking workers who can combine technological fluency with leadership, communication and creative thinking. Occupations likely to benefit from AI augmentation are expected to experience stronger long-term growth than those centred primarily on routine information processing.
The debate remains far from settled. More than 200 economists, technology executives and researchers recently signed an open letter urging policymakers to prepare for potentially significant labour-market disruption if AI capabilities continue advancing rapidly. They warned that current employment effects may represent only the beginning of a larger economic transition, underscoring the importance of education, workforce development and social protections.
Yet amid the forecasts and policy discussions, the transformation is ultimately measured through individual careers.
Across industries, workers increasingly describe AI not as a separate technology but as another workplace tool requiring continual learning. The adjustment may involve acquiring technical knowledge, but it also demands confidence in judgement, adaptability and collaboration—qualities that employers continue to value precisely because they remain difficult to replicate.
As organisations redefine roles and workers reshape their careers, the central question is becoming less whether AI will change work than how people will continue finding purpose and opportunity within that change. Recent evidence from international organisations and employers suggests the future of work will depend not simply on building more capable machines, but on building workforces capable of evolving alongside them.
