SAN FRANCISCO — Advanced Micro Devices said on Wednesday it had reached a major artificial intelligence infrastructure agreement with Anthropic under which the AI startup will deploy up to 2 gigawatts of AMD's next-generation AI computing systems, while AMD committed to invest up to $5 billion in the company as the partners deepen their strategic relationship.
The agreement calls for Anthropic to purchase AI server systems built around AMD's Instinct MI450 series accelerators, with the first deployments expected in the first half of 2027. AMD said the installations will use its Helios rack-scale platform, combining Instinct GPUs, EPYC "Venice" processors, Pensando networking technology and ROCm software.
AMD said its planned equity investment of up to $5 billion will be made as specified deployment milestones are achieved. The company did not disclose the valuation at which the investment would be made or additional financial terms.
Chief Executive Lisa Su said the companies had been working together for some time and that AMD wanted to become "a major part" of Anthropic's computing infrastructure. She said the partnership reflected long-term planning between the engineering teams as demand for AI computing capacity continues to grow.
Anthropic said the collaboration would provide computing resources needed to support future generations of its Claude AI models. The companies also said Anthropic's AI models would be used to help improve AMD's software development and optimize GPU workloads.
The arrangement strengthens AMD's effort to expand its presence in the market for AI accelerators, where Nvidia remains the dominant supplier. AMD has announced a series of partnerships with major AI developers and cloud providers as customers seek to diversify sources of advanced AI chips and infrastructure.
According to AMD, Anthropic plans to deploy up to 2 gigawatts of computing capacity using the company's technology, a scale that would make the agreement one of the largest announced AI infrastructure deployments. The overall server purchases could amount to tens of billions of dollars over time, according to the companies and people familiar with the agreement cited by the Wall Street Journal.
AMD announced the partnership during its Advancing AI 2026 event in San Francisco, where it outlined new AI hardware and software products aimed at expanding its position in the rapidly growing market for generative AI infrastructure. Initial deployments under the Anthropic agreement are scheduled to begin in 2027.
