MELBOURNE — Veteran Australian broadcaster and former senator Derryn Hinch will be honored with a state funeral on Monday after the Victorian government accepted arrangements with his family following his death at the age of 82, officials said.
The Victorian government said the state funeral would take place on July 20, with members of the public invited to pay their respects and leave messages in an official online condolence book. The ceremony will be held at the Timber Yard in Port Melbourne after Hinch's preferred venue, Melbourne's Comedy Theatre, was unavailable.
Hinch, a journalist, radio and television broadcaster, and former independent senator for Victoria, died in his sleep earlier this month. His death was confirmed by Australian media, prompting tributes from political leaders, media organizations and former colleagues who reflected on a career spanning more than six decades.
Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan approved the state funeral after discussions with Hinch's long-time personal assistant, Annette Philpott, according to officials and people involved in the arrangements. Philpott said the honor recognized Hinch's contribution to public life and journalism.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also paid tribute following Hinch's death, acknowledging his long career in Australian media and public service, according to statements cited by those organizing the funeral.
The Victorian government described Hinch as a journalist and broadcaster whose advocacy extended beyond the media into politics and charitable work. After founding the Justice Party, he served as a senator for Victoria from 2016 to 2019, campaigning on justice system reforms and child protection measures. The government said his work as chair of Variety Victoria and his support for children's charities formed part of his public legacy.
Organizers said veteran broadcaster Ray Martin is expected to deliver one of the addresses at the service, while broadcaster Darren James will serve as master of ceremonies. Friends, former colleagues and public figures are expected to attend.
The Victorian government said the state funeral will proceed as scheduled on Monday, with further details for attendees available through official government channels.
