WASHINGTON — The United States carried out retaliatory military strikes against Iranian targets on Saturday after an attack on a Cyprus-flagged commercial container ship in the Strait of Hormuz, with U.S. officials saying the operation was intended to respond to what they described as Iranian attacks on international shipping.
U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said the strikes were ordered by President Donald Trump and targeted Iranian military assets linked to recent operations against commercial vessels. According to the U.S. military, the operation focused on facilities associated with missile, drone and other military capabilities involved in attacks threatening maritime security in the strategic waterway.
The latest action followed an assault on a Cyprus-flagged container ship that U.S. officials attributed to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The vessel sustained severe damage to its engine room, caught fire and was left unable to continue its voyage. U.S. officials said one civilian crew member remained missing following the attack.
Iran has not accepted the U.S. characterization of the events. Iranian authorities have previously maintained that their military actions were linked to enforcement measures in the Strait of Hormuz and have accused Washington of violating earlier understandings governing military activity in the region. Those competing claims could not be independently verified.
The exchange marked another escalation in a conflict that has repeatedly disrupted one of the world's most important energy shipping routes. The Strait of Hormuz carries a significant share of global oil and liquefied natural gas exports, and renewed military activity has heightened concerns over maritime security and commercial navigation.
CENTCOM said U.S. forces remained prepared to conduct additional operations if required to protect American personnel and ensure freedom of navigation. U.S. officials said the strikes were intended to degrade Iran's ability to conduct further attacks against commercial shipping rather than signal a broader expansion of military operations.
The latest developments come after several rounds of U.S. strikes earlier this month that targeted Iranian military infrastructure following attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. military statements said those operations struck air defense systems, command-and-control facilities, coastal radar sites and other military assets.
As of Saturday, officials had not announced further retaliatory measures beyond the latest exchange, while regional governments continued monitoring the security situation and commercial shipping through the Gulf.
