PATNA — Political strategist-turned-politician Prashant Kishor will contest the July 30 by-election from Bihar's Bankipur assembly constituency, marking his first attempt at elected office and setting up a closely watched contest in a seat long held by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Kishor's Jan Suraaj Party announced his candidature on Sunday after a meeting of its leadership, with state president Manoj Bharti saying the party had chosen its founder to fight the high-profile bypoll. The Election Commission has scheduled polling for July 30, while votes will be counted on Aug. 3. The last date for filing nominations is July 13.
The Bankipur seat became vacant after BJP leader and party national president Nitin Nabin was elected to the Rajya Sabha and resigned from the state assembly. The constituency, located in Patna, has been regarded as a BJP stronghold for decades, making the by-election an early electoral test for Kishor's transition from campaign strategist to active politician.
Speaking after the announcement, Kishor said he had deliberately chosen to contest from Bankipur instead of seeking what he described as a politically safer constituency. He said his decision was intended to encourage voters in Bihar to look beyond caste and religious considerations when casting their ballots.
Kishor also described the by-election as a political test of the BJP-led government in Bihar, saying voters should judge the administration's performance through the outcome of the contest.
The BJP had not formally announced its candidate as of Monday, although local media reported that the party was weighing several names to defend one of its most secure urban constituencies. The choice is expected to be closely scrutinized given Kishor's national profile and the symbolic importance of the contest.
Kishor built his reputation as one of India's best-known election strategists, advising multiple political parties before launching the Jan Suraaj movement and later transforming it into a political party focused on Bihar. His decision to contest personally follows years of statewide political outreach and comes after the party failed to secure representation in the previous state assembly election.
With nominations due over the coming week, attention will now turn to the BJP's candidate selection before campaigning intensifies ahead of the July 30 vote.
