PHILADELPHIA—Philadelphia canceled its marquee Independence Day parade as dangerous heat gripped the region, prompting organizers and city officials to prioritize public safety during celebrations marking the nation's 250th anniversary.
The Wawa Welcome America Salute to Independence Semiquincentennial Parade, scheduled for July 3 in the city's historic district, was called off after forecasts showed temperatures climbing above 100 degrees Fahrenheit, with humidity expected to push heat index values even higher. The decision followed several days of extreme heat that had already disrupted holiday events across the eastern United States.
Organizers had previously shortened the parade route to reduce participants' exposure to the heat, but concluded that conditions remained too hazardous for marchers, performers, volunteers and spectators. According to organizers, participant safety was the primary consideration in canceling the event.
Wawa Welcome America President and Chief Executive Officer Michael DelBene told local media that organizers were "more than disappointed" and "heartbroken" after months of preparation by participants and community groups. The parade was expected to feature more than 50 marching bands, themed floats, military units and representatives from all 50 states and U.S. territories as part of Philadelphia's semiquincentennial celebrations.
The cancellation came after Philadelphia tied its record high temperature of 103 degrees Fahrenheit on July 2, while an extended heat wave prompted warnings from meteorologists and public health officials. The city had already adjusted or canceled other outdoor events, including the Salute to Service concert, because of the weather.
City officials updated public guidance to reflect the cancellation while confirming that several indoor and evening events remained on the schedule, including the Liberty Medal ceremony and other festival activities judged safe to proceed under revised plans. Residents and visitors were urged to monitor official announcements for any additional schedule changes related to the weather.
The parade cancellation was among numerous weather-related disruptions affecting Independence Day events across the United States as a persistent heat dome produced record or near-record temperatures across large parts of the country. Authorities in several cities modified or postponed outdoor celebrations, while emergency officials advised people to limit outdoor activity, remain hydrated and seek air-conditioned spaces during the most intense afternoon heat.
Philadelphia officials said they would continue monitoring weather conditions while remaining holiday events proceeded under updated safety plans.
