EVIAN, France—Leaders of the Group of Seven concluded their summit by reaffirming support for Ukraine, pledging to increase pressure on Russia through additional sanctions and military assistance, while also endorsing diplomatic efforts aimed at preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon following recent developments in the Middle East.
In a joint statement issued at the close of the three-day meeting, the G7 leaders said they remained united in backing Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity and agreed to increase deliveries of air-defense capabilities, additional interceptors and long-range military support. The statement also said members were prepared to consider expanding licensing arrangements to help Ukraine increase domestic defense production.
The leaders said they would intensify economic pressure on Russia by strengthening sanctions, including measures targeting the country's oil and gas sectors and networks used to sustain its war effort. Several member governments also announced or reiterated national measures aimed at limiting Russia's ability to finance military operations.
Addressing the Middle East, the G7 welcomed what it described as a diplomatic opportunity created by a U.S.-Iran agreement intended to prevent Tehran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. The leaders said they supported implementation of the agreement and reaffirmed their commitment to regional stability and freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global energy shipping route.
The summit took place amid continuing fighting in Ukraine and heightened tensions in the Middle East. Discussions on both conflicts dominated the gathering alongside talks on global economic resilience, artificial intelligence, supply chains and international security.
Officials said the leaders also discussed maintaining support for Ukraine's energy infrastructure ahead of the coming winter and emphasized continued coordination among allies on military, financial and humanitarian assistance. The summit statement said G7 members remained committed to helping Ukraine withstand attacks on critical infrastructure while pursuing what they described as a just and lasting peace.
The summit concluded without announcing a timetable for further collective action beyond the commitments outlined in the joint communiqué. Member governments said implementation of the agreed measures, including sanctions and military assistance, would proceed through existing national and multilateral mechanisms in the coming months.
