MIAMI — U.S. officials are continuing preparations for the 2026 Group of 20 Leaders' Summit in Miami as Washington advances its agenda for its year-long G20 presidency, with planning focused on logistics, security and negotiations ahead of the December gathering of the world's largest economies.
The United States assumed the G20 presidency on Dec. 1, 2025, and has said its host-year priorities will center on economic growth, reducing regulatory burdens, expanding reliable and affordable energy supplies, promoting technological innovation and seeking areas of consensus on trade policy. The administration formally launched those priorities during the first G20 Sherpa meeting held in Washington in December 2025, according to the U.S. Department of State.
President Donald Trump announced last year that the leaders' summit will be held in Miami, with Trump National Doral serving as the venue. The summit is scheduled for Dec. 14-15, 2026, marking the first time in nearly two decades that the United States has hosted the annual gathering of G20 leaders.
Preparations have continued throughout 2026 as federal agencies, local authorities and G20 working groups coordinate on diplomatic meetings, transportation, security arrangements and ministerial events leading up to the summit. Miami officials have said hosting the event is expected to bring thousands of delegates, journalists and support personnel to South Florida, requiring extensive coordination among local, state and federal authorities.
The U.S. presidency has emphasized a more narrowly focused economic agenda than in some previous years, concentrating discussions on growth, investment, energy security, technology and trade. Negotiations among G20 sherpas have continued in advance of the leaders' meeting as member countries work toward drafting a joint declaration, although those discussions remain ongoing.
The choice of Trump National Doral as the summit venue has drawn scrutiny from some critics over potential conflicts of interest because the property is owned by the president's family business. Trump has rejected those concerns, saying he will not profit from hosting the summit, while administration officials have defended the selection as based on logistical considerations, including proximity to Miami International Airport and the site's capacity to accommodate large delegations.
The G20 brings together 19 major economies, the European Union and the African Union to discuss global economic and financial issues. Additional ministerial meetings and sherpa-level negotiations are expected to continue in the coming months before leaders convene in Miami in December.
