DOHA — Former Qatar Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who transformed the small Gulf state into a major global energy and diplomatic player during his 18-year rule, has died at the age of 74, Qatar’s Amiri Diwan announced.
The Amiri Diwan, Qatar’s official administrative body, announced the death on Sunday but did not disclose a cause. The government declared a four-day period of national mourning following his passing.
Sheikh Hamad ruled Qatar from 1995 until he handed power to his son, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, in 2013 in a rare voluntary transfer of authority in the Gulf. His reign coincided with rapid economic growth driven by the expansion of Qatar’s liquefied natural gas industry and increased international investment.
During his leadership, Qatar expanded its global diplomatic role, including efforts to mediate regional disputes, while also increasing its international influence through state-backed investments and the creation of major institutions. His government launched the Al Jazeera media network and oversaw Qatar’s successful bid to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Sheikh Hamad’s foreign policy drew both recognition and criticism. Qatar developed relationships with a range of regional and international actors, while its positions during the Arab Spring and its ties with some political movements contributed to tensions with neighboring Gulf states, including a 2017 diplomatic crisis involving Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt.
Following his abdication, Sheikh Hamad remained known domestically as the “Father Emir” and continued to be regarded as an influential figure in Qatar’s political life. His successor, Sheikh Tamim, has led the country since 2013.
Qatar’s authorities said funeral prayers were held in Doha and that the former emir was buried at Lusail Cemetery. The Amiri Diwan said Sheikh Tamim would receive mourners, including officials and dignitaries, in the days following his death.
The announcement of Sheikh Hamad’s death prompted condolences from governments and officials abroad, with several countries declaring mourning measures in recognition of his passing.
Qatar’s leadership has not announced any changes to the country’s governance arrangements following Sheikh Hamad’s death.
