GROS ISLET, Saint Lucia — Leaders of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) were set to begin formal business sessions on Monday after the opening of the bloc's 51st Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government, with regional integration, economic resilience and shared policy challenges expected to dominate discussions during the four-day summit.
The meeting, hosted by Saint Lucia from July 5 to July 8, marks the start of Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre's six-month tenure as CARICOM chairman following his assumption of the rotating leadership on July 1. According to the CARICOM Secretariat, the conference brings together heads of government from member states alongside senior regional officials and representatives of partner institutions.
The summit opened on Sunday with a ceremony featuring addresses by Pierre, outgoing CARICOM Chair and Saint Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew, and CARICOM Secretary-General Dr. Carla Barnett. The ceremony officially launched the conference before leaders moved into closed-door policy deliberations scheduled for July 6 and 7.
CARICOM has said the business sessions will focus on issues central to the regional agenda, although detailed discussions are being held in private. The conference serves as the bloc's principal decision-making forum, where member states coordinate positions on regional economic development, trade, climate resilience, security, foreign policy and institutional cooperation.
Saint Lucia is hosting the meeting in Gros Islet under the theme "CARICOM: From Resilience to Renewal in a Changing World," reflecting the regional body's emphasis on strengthening cooperation amid evolving economic and geopolitical challenges. Pierre has previously said his chairmanship would seek to advance practical outcomes for Caribbean citizens through deeper regional collaboration and institutional renewal.
The CARICOM Secretariat has established an online information platform providing official updates, livestreams, photographs and documents related to the meeting, including the communiqué expected after the conference concludes. Accredited regional and international media are covering the proceedings from the summit venue.
The conference is scheduled to conclude on July 8 with a hybrid closing news conference, during which leaders are expected to outline decisions reached during the summit and provide updates on agreed regional initiatives, according to the CARICOM Secretariat.
