PATNA — Political activity surrounding the upcoming Bankipur Assembly bypoll intensified on Sunday as the Jan Suraaj Party named its founder, political strategist-turned-politician Prashant Kishor, as its candidate, setting the stage for a closely watched contest that parties view as an important indicator of Bihar's evolving political landscape ahead of future electoral battles.
The bypoll, scheduled for July 30, was announced by the Election Commission of India after the Bankipur seat fell vacant following the resignation of BJP leader Nitin Nabin, who moved to the Rajya Sabha. Votes are scheduled to be counted on Aug. 3. The Election Commission formally issued the election notification on July 6, with nominations to close on July 13, scrutiny on July 14 and the withdrawal deadline set for July 16.
Kishor's decision marks his electoral debut after years as a political consultant and more recently as the leader of the Jan Suraaj Party. Announcing his candidature, the party said it intended to present an alternative political platform in Bihar, while Kishor described the contest as an opportunity to seek a direct public mandate.
The Bankipur constituency, located in Patna, has long been regarded as a Bharatiya Janata Party stronghold, with the party and its predecessors holding the seat for decades.
