TAIPEI — Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) said on Thursday it would invest an additional $100 billion in semiconductor manufacturing and advanced packaging facilities in Arizona, expanding a U.S. commitment that the company said was facilitated by a broader trade and investment agreement reached between the administration of President Donald Trump and Taiwan.

The new commitment raises TSMC's planned investment in the United States to $265 billion and will fund four additional advanced chip fabrication plants and related packaging facilities, bringing the total number of planned leading-edge manufacturing and packaging facilities in Arizona to 12, according to the company and the U.S. Commerce Department.

TSMC Chairman and Chief Executive C.C. Wei said the expansion was intended to meet strong long-term demand from major U.S. customers for advanced semiconductors used in artificial intelligence and high-performance computing.

"We appreciate the strong collaboration and support of the Trump Administration, Secretary Lutnick and our leading U.S. customers," Wei said in a statement released by U.S. authorities, adding that the expanded investment would strengthen the U.S. semiconductor ecosystem, reinforce supply chains and support job creation.

The White House and Commerce Department said the investment followed a U.S.-Taiwan trade and investment agreement announced earlier in 2026. U.S. officials said the arrangement was expected to encourage broader Taiwanese investment in American semiconductor manufacturing and related industries.

The announcement came as TSMC reported record second-quarter earnings, driven by sustained global demand for advanced AI chips. The company posted net profit of about T$706.6 billion ($22 billion), up 77% from a year earlier, and raised its 2026 capital expenditure forecast to between $60 billion and $64 billion.

Wei told investors the company continued to see a multiyear expansion in AI-related demand and said future construction schedules would depend on customer requirements and market conditions rather than a fixed timetable.

President Trump has made expanding domestic semiconductor manufacturing a central element of his industrial policy, arguing that increasing chip production in the United States would strengthen supply-chain resilience and reduce reliance on overseas manufacturing. TSMC is a key supplier of advanced chips for companies including Nvidia and Apple.

The company said its latest investment would focus on manufacturing chips using 2-nanometer and more advanced process technologies. Construction and deployment of the additional facilities will proceed according to customer demand and project development schedules, TSMC said.
