SINGAPORE — Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has announced a cabinet reshuffle that promotes younger political office holders while retaining experienced senior leaders in key roles, describing the changes as the next step in the country's leadership transition ahead of future challenges.
The changes, announced on Wednesday, will largely take effect on July 27, according to the Prime Minister's Office. Wong said the revised lineup balances continuity with renewal by giving newer ministers greater responsibilities while preserving experienced leadership to guide the government through an uncertain global environment.
Among the most significant appointments, Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam will become Senior Minister while continuing to oversee the home affairs portfolio and serve as Coordinating Minister for National Security. Wong said Shanmugam and Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong would continue to provide counsel and mentor younger office holders during the transition.
Manpower Minister Tan See Leng will move to jointly lead the renamed Ministry of Energy, Trade and Industry alongside Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong. According to the government, Gan will oversee the ministry's overall strategy while Tan will focus on energy and industry matters, reflecting the growing importance of energy security and economic transformation. The ministry will officially adopt its new name on Oct. 1.
The reshuffle also promotes Jeffrey Siow, David Neo and Sim Ann to full ministerial positions. Jasmin Lau will become Acting Minister for Manpower, while Ng Chee Meng, secretary-general of the National Trades Union Congress, returns to Cabinet as Minister in the Prime Minister's Office. Several other office holders will assume new minister of state and senior minister of state appointments.
Speaking at a news conference, Wong said Singapore required "both experienced leaders to steer through immediate challenges, and a new generation ready to take us forward," according to an official transcript released by the Prime Minister's Office.
The reshuffle is Wong's third since he succeeded Lee as prime minister in 2024 and follows recent political resignations that created vacancies in the government. While introducing younger leaders into more prominent roles, Wong retained most senior ministers in their existing portfolios, a move analysts said underscores the government's emphasis on continuity during a period of global economic uncertainty.
The Prime Minister's Office said the new appointments will take effect from July 27 unless otherwise specified, with the renaming of the Ministry of Energy, Trade and Industry scheduled for Oct. 1.
