KYIV—Russian missile and drone strikes across Ukraine killed at least eight people and wounded dozens more on Thursday, Ukrainian authorities said, in one of the latest large-scale attacks of the war as rescue operations continued in several regions.

Ukraine's State Emergency Service and regional officials said fatalities were reported in multiple locations, with the heaviest losses in the Dnipropetrovsk region, where officials said children were among those killed after a missile struck a residential area near Kryvyi Rih. Additional casualties and damage were reported in Kyiv, Lviv and other regions, while emergency crews searched damaged buildings for possible survivors.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia launched more than 70 missiles and over 280 drones during the overnight assault. Ukrainian officials said air defence systems intercepted many incoming weapons but were unable to prevent all strikes, which damaged homes, infrastructure and other civilian sites.

Russia's Defence Ministry said its forces had carried out strikes on military-related targets, including defence industry facilities and air bases. Reuters could not independently verify battlefield claims from either side.

The attacks also prompted a security response in neighbouring Poland after authorities said an object believed to be a Russian missile entered Polish airspace before crashing in the country's east. Polish officials said the incident was under investigation and that no injuries were reported there.

Emergency services said search and rescue operations remained underway in several affected areas, and officials warned that casualty figures could change as crews continued clearing debris.
