HONG KONG — Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) said it will invest an additional $100 billion to expand semiconductor manufacturing in the United States, deepening its commitment to Arizona as surging demand for artificial intelligence chips drives record earnings and higher capital spending.

The new commitment raises TSMC's total planned investment in the United States to about $265 billion, following previously announced plans to invest $165 billion in six fabrication facilities in Arizona. The additional funding will support the construction of four more advanced fabrication plants, with production focused on leading-edge process technologies of 2 nanometers and below, the company said during its quarterly earnings briefing.

Chairman and Chief Executive C.C. Wei announced the expansion while the world's largest contract chipmaker reported a record second-quarter net profit of NT$706.6 billion (about $22 billion), a 77% increase from a year earlier, exceeding market expectations. The company also raised its full-year revenue growth outlook to more than 40%, citing sustained demand for advanced chips used in artificial intelligence infrastructure and data centers.

TSMC increased its 2026 capital expenditure forecast to between $60 billion and $64 billion, up from an earlier estimate of $52 billion to $56 billion, reflecting accelerated investment in manufacturing capacity to meet customer demand. Wei said the company continues to see a long-term growth trajectory for AI-related semiconductor demand and intends to expand capacity while seeking to avoid oversupply.

The company is a critical supplier of advanced chips for major technology firms including Nvidia and Apple, whose products have benefited from rapid investment in AI computing. TSMC has been expanding production in Taiwan, Japan and the United States as governments and customers seek greater resilience in semiconductor supply chains.

The U.S. Commerce Department welcomed the additional investment, describing it as consistent with broader efforts to strengthen domestic semiconductor manufacturing and expand advanced chip production in the United States. The announcement also comes as Washington continues to encourage investment in strategic technologies through industrial policy and cooperation with key partners.
