ATLANTA — England booked a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 round of 16 with a 2-1 comeback win over the Democratic Republic of Congo in a Round of 32 knockout match on Wednesday, July 1, according to match reports and official lineups.
DR Congo took an early lead through Brian Cipenga in the seventh minute, finishing a low shot after exploiting space in England’s defence, in what was the African side’s first-ever World Cup knockout-stage appearance following their progression from the group phase.
England, who topped Group L unbeaten, dominated possession but struggled to convert early chances against a disciplined DR Congo back line and goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi. Midfielder Jude Bellingham and striker Harry Kane both had first-half efforts saved as England were repeatedly frustrated before the interval.
England manager Thomas Tuchel made three changes to his starting lineup, including the return of midfielder Declan Rice to reinforce the centre of the pitch, according to team sheets published ahead of kick-off.
DR Congo’s lead held into the second half as England increased attacking pressure, with substitute Anthony Gordon providing greater width and tempo after his introduction.
England equalised in the 75th minute when Kane headed in from close range following a cross, before the captain completed the turnaround in the 86th minute with a long-range strike into the top corner, securing his second goal of the match.
The result sends England into the round of 16, where they will face co-hosts Mexico, according to the official knockout bracket pathway. DR Congo exit the tournament after a historic run that included their first-ever World Cup knockout qualification.
England’s lineup included Jordan Pickford, Ezri Konsa, Marc Guéhi, Djed Spence, Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham, Marcus Rashford, Noni Madueke and Kane, while DR Congo featured Chancel Mbemba, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Yoane Wissa among their starters.
No disciplinary or injury updates were immediately confirmed by FIFA following the match.
England’s next fixture is scheduled for the round of 16 stage on July 5.
