The outcomes have intensified an ongoing debate within the Democratic Party over its ideological direction ahead of the November midterm elections. Candidates backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) prevailed in several closely watched races, including contests against incumbent members of Congress and candidates supported by prominent Democratic leaders. The primary winners will now advance to the November general election in districts that have historically favored Democrats.
Among the winners, Darializa Avila Chevalier defeated five-term Representative Adriano Espaillat in the Democratic primary for New York's 13th Congressional District, while Claire Valdez won an open-seat contest and Brad Lander defeated Representative Dan Goldman in another congressional primary, according to election results and multiple media reports.
Speaking after her victory in an interview published by Democracy Now! on June 24, Avila Chevalier said, "Babies, not bombs," reiterating a campaign message that emphasized domestic priorities and criticism of U.S. foreign policy. The interview followed her victory in Tuesday's primary.
The victories were widely viewed as a significant test of Mamdani's political influence following his rise within New York City politics. Analysts said the results reflected growing support for progressive candidates in parts of the city while also exposing divisions between the Democratic Party's progressive and centrist factions.
