CHICAGO— A series of fatal boating accidents, drownings and water-related emergencies during the U.S. Independence Day holiday weekend left multiple people dead and dozens injured across the country, prompting authorities to renew warnings about hazardous weather, rip currents and safe boating practices.
Among the dead were three people whose recreational boat capsized on Geneva Lake in southeastern Wisconsin after a fast-moving storm swept across the area on Friday. Local law enforcement agencies and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources said seven other occupants were rescued, while investigators continued examining the circumstances surrounding the incident. Officials said rapidly deteriorating weather contributed to dangerous conditions on the lake.
In Oregon, the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office said one woman died and four other adults were injured after a 33-foot cabin cruiser struck part of a dock structure on the Willamette River near Sauvie Island late Saturday. Authorities said the cause of the crash remains under investigation and have not determined whether speed, impairment or other factors played a role.
In Maryland, nine people were injured when a recreational boat exploded shortly after refueling near Chesapeake City on Saturday afternoon. Emergency officials said several victims suffered serious burns and four were flown to hospitals for treatment. Investigators said the cause had not been determined, although authorities were examining whether fuel vapors may have contributed to the blast.
Water-related fatalities also occurred away from recreational boating. In Volusia County, Florida, beach safety officials reported two drownings during the holiday weekend while lifeguards and first responders rescued more than 200 swimmers caught in hazardous surf and rip currents. The Volusia County Sheriff's Office urged beachgoers to heed warning flags and avoid entering rough water.
Authorities in several states also responded to additional fatal incidents involving swimmers and boaters over the weekend as large crowds gathered for holiday celebrations, with investigations continuing in many cases.
The incidents occurred as federal, state and local agencies conducted Operation Dry Water, a nationwide enforcement campaign aimed at reducing boating under the influence during one of the busiest weekends of the year. The U.S. Coast Guard has identified alcohol as the leading known contributing factor in fatal recreational boating accidents, while officials have also emphasized the importance of wearing life jackets, monitoring weather forecasts and avoiding waterways when conditions deteriorate.
