LOS ANGELES — Firefighters battled multiple wildfires across California on Saturday as hot, dry conditions and elevated fire danger complicated suppression efforts during the Independence Day holiday weekend, prompting officials to warn residents against activities that could ignite new blazes.
The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) reported several active incidents across the state, including the Point Fire in Merced County, which had burned about 650 acres and was 50% contained as of the latest official update. Other fires remained active in Los Angeles, Riverside and San Diego counties, while crews continued mop-up operations on a number of smaller incidents.
No fatalities had been reported from the active California fires listed by the agency, though firefighting operations continued as temperatures climbed in inland areas and vegetation remained increasingly dry.
Fire officials urged residents to comply with local restrictions on fireworks and open burning, warning that even small ignition sources could rapidly spread under current conditions. The warnings coincided with the July 4 holiday, traditionally one of the busiest periods for wildfire responses because of increased outdoor recreation and fireworks use.
CAL FIRE has forecast above-normal large-fire activity across much of the state during the peak summer months, citing below-average precipitation in parts of California, rapidly curing grasses, declining snowpack and increasingly dry fuels. The agency has expanded staffing for the 2026 fire season and advised homeowners to maintain defensible space around structures and prepare evacuation plans.
Meteorologists said inland portions of California, including parts of the Central Valley and desert regions, were expected to experience temperatures exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit over the holiday weekend, conditions that can accelerate the drying of vegetation and increase wildfire risk. Although coastal areas were forecast to remain considerably cooler because of the marine layer, officials said fire danger remained elevated in many interior locations.
Across the western United States, wildfire activity has intensified in recent weeks, with the National Interagency Fire Center reporting dozens of large uncontained fires and maintaining the national preparedness level at 4 on its five-level scale, indicating heavy demand for firefighting resources.
Authorities said suppression efforts would continue through the holiday weekend while emergency agencies monitored weather conditions and responded to any new fire starts. Residents were advised to follow evacuation instructions if issued and report signs of wildfire immediately to local emergency services.
