SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — A vacationer was injured after a black bear charged the person in the Lake Tahoe area of eastern California, prompting a response from wildlife authorities and renewed warnings for visitors to avoid close encounters with bears and properly secure food and other attractants.
Local authorities said the incident occurred in the Lake Tahoe Basin, where emergency responders treated the injured individual before the person was taken for medical evaluation. Officials said the injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife said it was investigating the encounter to determine what led to the charge and whether the bear had previously been involved in conflicts with people. Authorities had not released the identity of the injured vacationer or additional details about the circumstances of the encounter.
Officials urged the public not to approach bears, even if the animals appear calm, and reminded visitors that feeding wildlife or leaving food, trash or scented items unsecured can increase the likelihood of dangerous interactions.
The Tahoe region is home to a large population of American black bears, and wildlife managers have repeatedly warned that bears accustomed to human food can become increasingly bold. California State Parks issued guidance earlier this year advising visitors to store food securely, dispose of garbage in bear-resistant containers and maintain a safe distance from wildlife as bears emerge from winter dens and search for natural food sources.
Wildlife officials said bear attacks on people remain uncommon, but encounters have increased in recent years as more bears seek food in developed areas. Authorities have previously responded to incidents involving bears entering homes, vehicles and campgrounds around Lake Tahoe, with officials stressing that preventing bears from obtaining human food is critical to reducing future conflicts.
Investigators said they would continue assessing the latest incident to determine whether additional management measures are necessary. Authorities asked anyone who witnesses aggressive bear behavior in the Lake Tahoe area to report it promptly to wildlife officials while avoiding any attempt to approach or confront the animal.
