WASHINGTON—Federal and local authorities significantly expanded security measures across Washington on Saturday as hundreds of thousands of visitors were expected to gather for events marking the 250th anniversary of American independence, with officials citing the scale of the celebrations and the designation of the holiday as a National Special Security Event.

The U.S. Secret Service is leading security operations in coordination with the Metropolitan Police Department, U.S. Capitol Police, National Park Service, Homeland Security and other federal, state and local agencies. The National Special Security Event designation, typically reserved for presidential inaugurations and other high-profile gatherings, enables enhanced coordination, intelligence sharing and resource deployment.

Officials established extensive security perimeters around the National Mall and the Washington Monument grounds, where visitors were required to pass through magnetometer screening and bag inspections before entering designated event areas. Authorities also imposed restrictions on numerous items, including firearms, drones, large bags, glass containers and other objects considered potential safety risks. The event area was also declared a no-drone zone, with officials warning that unauthorized drone operations could result in criminal penalties.

District officials urged attendees to rely on public transportation because of extensive road closures and heightened security checkpoints throughout downtown Washington. Emergency managers also advised visitors to prepare for prolonged periods outdoors by carrying water, seeking cooling stations and monitoring weather conditions amid forecasts of dangerous heat. Medical tents and additional public safety personnel were deployed across the event footprint.

The celebrations were scheduled to feature military flyovers, live entertainment, a presidential address and a large fireworks display over the National Mall. Organizers expected unusually large crowds for the semiquincentennial observance, prompting authorities to implement what officials described as one of the most comprehensive security operations ever mounted for an Independence Day celebration in the nation's capital.

Public safety officials said security planning had been underway for months and emphasized that no specific, credible threat to the celebrations had been announced publicly. They encouraged visitors to remain alert, report suspicious activity and follow instructions from law enforcement personnel throughout the day.

Authorities said security operations would remain in effect through the conclusion of the evening's events, with road closures and restricted access expected to continue until crowds had safely dispersed following the fireworks display.
