BHUBANESWAR— A passenger bus overturned in Odisha on Tuesday, leaving several people critically injured and prompting a large-scale rescue operation by emergency services, according to police and local authorities.
The accident occurred after the bus reportedly lost control and overturned on a roadway in the state. Police said multiple passengers sustained serious injuries and were transferred to nearby hospitals for specialized treatment, while others with less severe injuries received initial medical care at local health facilities. Authorities had not released a final casualty count at the time of publication as officials continued to verify the number of passengers and the extent of injuries.
Fire service personnel, police officers and local residents took part in rescue efforts to remove passengers trapped inside the overturned vehicle. Ambulances transported the injured to hospitals after first responders secured the scene. Officials said rescue operations were completed after all passengers were accounted for.
Police said an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the crash. Investigators are examining whether driver error, vehicle condition or road conditions contributed to the accident. Authorities said no conclusions had been reached and urged the public not to speculate while the inquiry remains underway.
State officials said medical teams had been instructed to ensure prompt treatment for the injured, particularly those listed in critical condition. Hospital authorities continued to monitor the most seriously hurt passengers, while relatives were being informed of their condition, officials said.
Road accidents involving buses remain a recurring safety concern in Odisha, particularly on routes with steep gradients and sharp bends. Earlier this year, several major bus crashes in the state resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries, leading authorities to reiterate calls for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, regular vehicle fitness inspections and improved driver safety measures.
Police said the investigation would include inspection of the vehicle and statements from the driver, survivors and witnesses. Officials said additional information, including confirmed injury figures and the findings of the preliminary inquiry, would be released as it becomes available.
