MANILA — Television host and comedian Vice Ganda urged graduating communication students at the University of the Philippines Diliman to help combat disinformation and use their platforms responsibly, telling the Class of 2026 that they are expected to “spark change, not chaos.”
Vice Ganda delivered the commencement address during the recognition rites of the University of the Philippines Diliman College of Media and Communication (UP CMC) on July 5, where the entertainer emphasized the responsibilities that come with studying at the country's premier state university and entering professions that shape public discourse.
“Much is expected of you because you are the product of the country's premier university. You are expected to spark change, not chaos. You are expected to share your education, not disinformation,” Vice Ganda told the graduates, according to reports published Monday.
The television personality also urged the graduates not to become agents of corruption or misinformation, calling on them to uphold ethical standards in journalism, media and communication. The speech centered on the role of communicators in promoting truth, accountability and responsible public engagement at a time when false information continues to circulate widely online.
Addressing about 180 graduates, Vice Ganda reflected on personal experiences with poverty, saying those hardships became motivation to pursue opportunities in entertainment through determination and hard work. At the same time, the entertainer acknowledged that perseverance alone is often insufficient for many Filipinos because of broader structural challenges, adding that opportunity also plays a role in individual success.
Vice Ganda also spoke about the responsibilities that accompany public influence, saying experiences in the media industry had reinforced the importance of using a public platform carefully and responsibly. The entertainer said communicators should amplify truth and contribute positively to society rather than manipulate public opinion.
The address drew attention across Philippine media because of its emphasis on integrity, public service and the role of media professionals in confronting misinformation. Reports said the speech combined personal reflections with a broader appeal for graduates to use their education and communication skills in the public interest.
