LAS VEGAS — Hot Dog on a Stick, the California-born fast-food chain known for its corn dogs, striped employee uniforms and hand-stomped lemonade, is planning an aggressive expansion under new owner Amazing Brands after being acquired through a bankruptcy court-approved sale earlier this month, company officials said.
Stephen Siegel, founder of Las Vegas-based Amazing Brands, said the company intends to grow the 80-year-old brand well beyond its traditional mall locations by opening flagship restaurants, drive-thru outlets and stores in airports, stadiums, amusement parks, entertainment districts and other high-traffic destinations. The company also plans to pursue growth through a combination of company-owned restaurants and franchised locations.
The acquisition follows the bankruptcy of former parent Fat Brands, which filed for Chapter 11 protection earlier this year as it sought to restructure its debt. Amazing Brands announced on July 8 that an affiliate had acquired Hot Dog on a Stick through a court-approved transaction, marking the latest ownership change for the chain.
Founded in 1946 near Muscle Beach in Santa Monica, California, Hot Dog on a Stick grew into a fixture of shopping mall food courts across the western United States. The company said it currently operates 44 corporate-owned and franchised restaurants, down from more than 100 locations at its peak.
“This acquisition is personal for me,” Siegel said in a company statement announcing the deal. “I grew up loving Hot Dog on a Stick.” He added that the company's strategy would focus on preserving the brand's identity while modernizing operations, marketing, restaurant design and menu offerings.
Siegel also told the Los Angeles Times that he aims to expand the chain to about 1,000 locations over the next five years, while introducing new menu items alongside the company's traditional corn dogs and lemonade. Proposed additions under consideration include fried fish, breakfast sausage, chicken strips and lobster served on sticks, as well as new lemonade flavors.
Amazing Brands said it plans to retain the company's existing employees and corporate staff while investing in operational improvements and leadership expansion to support long-term growth. The company described its strategy as disciplined expansion rather than a rapid return to the mall-focused model that helped define the brand in previous decades.
The original Hot Dog on a Stick stand near the Santa Monica Pier will continue operating as the company begins its expansion plans, with a Las Vegas flagship location among the projects under consideration.
