HILO, Hawaii — A strong magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck off the coast of Hawaii Island on Saturday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
The quake occurred at approximately 2:46 p.m. local time (HST) about 13 km (8 miles) south-southeast of Honaunau-Napoopoo in the South Kona district, according to USGS data. It was centered at a depth of about 22 km (14 miles).
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said no tsunami was expected from the event.
Hawaii County officials reported no immediate information on damage or injuries. Details on impacts remained unclear in the hours immediately following the quake as authorities assessed the situation.
The earthquake was widely felt across the Big Island, with residents reporting strong shaking in areas including Kailua-Kona and Hilo. Social media and local reports described items falling from shelves and brief power fluctuations in some locations, though widespread outages were not confirmed.
Hawaii Island, also known as the Big Island, sits in a seismically active region due to its volcanic activity. The area is home to active volcanoes including Kilauea and Mauna Loa, monitored closely by the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.
Saturday's event comes amid ongoing seismic activity in the region, though it was significantly stronger than the minor quakes typically recorded.
"People should remain vigilant and check their surroundings for any hazards like fallen objects or gas leaks," a Hawaii County Civil Defense official said in an initial statement.
No tsunami threat was issued for the Hawaiian Islands or other Pacific regions. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Ewa Beach continued to monitor the situation.
As of late Saturday afternoon, emergency services had not reported any major structural damage or casualties. Officials urged residents to follow standard earthquake safety protocols, including preparing emergency kits and securing heavy furniture.
