KYIV — At least nine people were killed and 30 injured in an overnight Russian missile and drone attack on Kyiv, Ukrainian officials said on Saturday, as emergency crews searched damaged buildings in the capital.
The attack struck residential and other civilian areas across several districts, causing fires and damaging buildings, according to Ukrainian authorities. Rescue workers were deployed to evacuate residents and search for people who may have been trapped.
Ukrainian officials said the assault involved ballistic missiles and drones. The Ukrainian Air Force said Russia launched 35 missiles, including 27 ballistic missiles, and 185 drones in the overnight attack, according to reports carried by the Associated Press.
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy called for increased supplies of air-defense systems from Ukraine's Western allies, saying the country needed additional protection against ballistic missiles.
The attack came after another large-scale Russian strike on Ukraine earlier in the week. Kyiv has repeatedly been targeted by Russian missile and drone attacks since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022.
The casualty figures were reported by Ukrainian authorities and may be revised as rescue and recovery operations continue. The latest confirmed toll was nine dead and 30 injured, with emergency services continuing to assess the damage.
