The result at Seattle’s Lumen Field concluded Group B play, with Bosnia earning four points from three matches and keeping alive its hopes of advancing as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams. Qatar, appearing in its second consecutive World Cup, finished with one point from three matches.
Bosnia entered the match knowing a win was likely necessary to remain in contention for progression under the expanded 48-team tournament format. The team responded with an attacking display, scoring three times and overcoming a Qatar side that had struggled throughout the group stage. Bosnia’s victory followed an earlier draw with Canada and a defeat to Switzerland. Qatar opened its campaign with a draw against Switzerland before suffering losses to Canada and Bosnia.
According to tournament records, Bosnia and Herzegovina finished third in Group B behind Switzerland and Canada. The expanded World Cup format allows the eight best third-placed teams across the 12 groups to advance to the Round of 32, making goal difference and overall performance significant factors in qualification.
Bosnia coach Sergej Barbarez praised his squad after the match. “I am incredibly proud,” Barbarez said, according to Reuters, while emphasizing that the team’s young players have shown promise throughout the tournament. Bosnia’s campaign has drawn attention for its blend of experienced veterans and emerging talent, including teenage midfielder Kerim Alajbegovic and veteran striker Edin Džeko.
Qatar’s elimination marked a disappointing end to its tournament. The team scored only a small number of goals across three matches and conceded heavily in defeats to Canada and Bosnia. Officials from the Qatari football federation had not publicly commented on the result by Thursday.
The match was played simultaneously with Switzerland’s 2-1 victory over Canada, a scheduling arrangement designed to preserve competitive balance in the final round of group-stage fixtures. Both matches helped determine the final Group B standings.
As of June 25, Bosnia and Herzegovina had secured advancement to the Round of 32 through the ranking of third-placed teams, while Qatar’s World Cup campaign had come to an end. Bosnia is expected to learn its knockout-stage opponent once the remaining group-stage matches are completed.
