LONDON — Novak Djokovic began his 2026 Wimbledon campaign on opening day with a first-round victory over China’s Wu Yibing, moving forward in his pursuit of another title at the All England Club. The Serbian, a seven-time Wimbledon champion, was among the headline names on the opening schedule as the tournament started on Monday.
Djokovic defeated Wu in straight sets on Centre Court, according to match reports from the opening day of Wimbledon action. The result marked the start of another Grand Slam campaign for the 24-time major singles champion, who entered the tournament seeking to add to his record collection of men’s major titles.
The 2026 Wimbledon Championships began with several of the sport’s leading players in action across the grass courts at the All England Club. The opening day schedule featured Djokovic alongside defending men’s champion Jannik Sinner, women’s top seed Aryna Sabalenka and other leading contenders.
Djokovic’s appearance continued his long association with Wimbledon, where he has won seven men’s singles titles and established himself as one of the tournament’s most successful players. His latest campaign comes as he continues competing among the sport’s elite later in his career.
Elsewhere on the opening day, Sinner overcame Miomir Kecmanovic in a five-set match, while Sabalenka advanced with a straight-sets win over Teodora Kostovic. Naomi Osaka and Coco Gauff also progressed in their first-round matches, while several seeded players experienced early setbacks.
The tournament’s opening day also featured withdrawals and upsets, including the withdrawal of British players Jack Draper and Emma Raducanu because of injury concerns, while other seeded players were eliminated in first-round matches.
Wimbledon, the third Grand Slam tournament of the tennis season, is being held from June 29 to July 12 at the All England Club in London. Players are competing through the men’s and women’s singles draws as they seek qualification for the later rounds of the championship.
