BELFAST — Police in Northern Ireland arrested a Sudanese man on suspicion of attempted murder after a knife attack in north Belfast that left a man in his 40s with serious injuries, prompting political leaders and authorities to appeal for calm.
The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. on Monday in the Kinnaird Avenue area, according to the Police Service of Northern Ireland. Officers responded to reports of a stabbing and detained a 30-year-old man at the scene. A kitchen knife was recovered, police said.
The victim sustained significant injuries to his eyes and slash wounds to his face and back. He remained in serious condition in hospital on Tuesday, authorities said. Bystanders intervened to stop the attack, with some credited by police with helping to save the victim's life.
The suspect, who police said had been granted leave to remain in the UK in September 2023 after claiming asylum, lived locally. He was later charged with attempted murder, possession of an article with a blade or point in a public place, and threats to kill. He is due to appear in court on Wednesday.
Northern Ireland's Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson described the attack as "brutal" and declared it a critical incident. "I understand that last night's attempted murder will leave people feeling a range of emotions, from fear to anger," Henderson said at a press conference. "I appeal for calm and the safety of all of our communities in response to this."
Political leaders, including First Minister Michelle O'Neill and Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly, issued a joint statement condemning the violence and calling for restraint. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the incident as "sickening." There was no indication the attack was terrorism-related, police said.
The attack, captured on video and widely shared online, sparked calls for protests, leading police to increase their presence in the area. Authorities urged the public not to share the graphic footage.
Northern Ireland has seen heightened tensions over immigration issues in the past, including unrest last year. Officials stressed the need to allow justice to take its course without disruption.
As of Tuesday evening, the suspect remained in custody, and no other individuals were being sought in connection with the incident. Investigations were ongoing, police said. Details about the precise circumstances leading to the attack remain subject to further verification.
