LOS ANGELES—Netflix has cast Melissa McCarthy as Patsy Ramsey in its upcoming limited series The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey, the streaming company announced on Wednesday, confirming that the long-delayed project will premiere this winter after moving from its original home at Paramount+.
The eight-episode drama stars Clive Owen as John Ramsey and Emily Mitchell as JonBenét Ramsey, the six-year-old beauty pageant contestant whose 1996 killing in Boulder, Colorado, remains officially unsolved. The project was originally developed for Paramount+ before being shelved in late 2025 and later acquired by Netflix.
According to Netflix's synopsis, the series explores "one of the most infamous unsolved murder cases in American history" and examines both the killing and the personal and public consequences that followed for the Ramsey family.
The cast also includes Garrett Hedlund as Detective Steve Thomas, Alison Pill as Detective Linda Arndt, Shea Whigham as Boulder District Attorney Alex Hunter, Clifton Collins Jr., Owen Teague, Angus Caldwell as Burke Ramsey, and Jaime Ray Newman. Richard LaGravenese serves as showrunner, with Harrison Query and Tommy Wallach writing and executive producing the series. Anne Sewitsky directed four episodes, including the premiere.
McCarthy, best known for comedic roles in films including Bridesmaids and Spy, takes on one of the most dramatic roles of her career portraying Patsy Ramsey, who died in 2006. Owen portrays John Ramsey, who has continued to publicly advocate for renewed investigative efforts in the case.
JonBenét Ramsey was found dead in the basement of her family's Boulder home on Dec. 26, 1996, hours after her mother reported her missing. The investigation generated intense media attention and remains one of the highest-profile unsolved homicide cases in the United States. In 2008, then-Boulder District Attorney Mary Lacy announced that DNA testing had led her office to clear members of the Ramsey family as suspects, although subsequent officials have noted that the case remains open and unresolved.
Netflix said The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey will debut globally this winter, nearly 30 years after JonBenét Ramsey's death. The company has not announced a specific premiere date.
